A QUESTION TO ALL ANIMATORS ABOUT A CERTAIN RATIO

Posted by MorrowDays - March 20th, 2009

I was thinking about how I'll fairly regularly start something and not finish it, and I was wondering about you guys, what do you think the ratio is between projects completed and projects not? It leads into other interesting ideas, for instance, does a better ratio generally correspond with being a better animator?

I don't know. If you guys post back with your ratio we'll all know a bit more I guess. :)

I think mine would probably be about 2 to 1 right now, two started and one finished out of three. 1/3. a third.

In terms of completion, I guess we all have different ideas about that but I'd say just go with what you feel means complete.

Also, I animated something recently. Its kind of neat I think.

Comments

mine is about 4 to 1 i guess. i start off on a random flash that seems good at the time, then lose interest.

Mine's probably about 4 to 1, maybe more, for the same reason as fluffkomix.

interesting, that seems to be pretty common.

sometimes i do a really good drawing in the first frame of a cartoon, and then i suddenly go "wow theres no fucking way im going to be able to animate this."

yeah, I think thats a fairly well known problem.

doesn't seem to faze newshape though, the drawings that guy animates are amazing.

1/99

haha

1 : 4

Umm. I hate not finishing things so I seem to always get it done even if I am unhappy with it. Especially last year. I would definitely be in the minority though.

I've written scripts for movies I never started and if I don't count those I've only ever dropped one flash I worked on. That was ages ago. Although there is one that I would like to get back to and sort of start over again. I don't think I would count that as dropped yet.

I also did a movie once where I used the art work I had for another movie instead.

Does it make you better that you get more projects done? No. You can always use from what you learned from dropped movies on newer ones.

Although I guess, if you can never finish one it's a little pointless.

Most people with a lot of flash are authors not concerned with quality and submit mostly spam. Not all of them but most. Or their movies are REALLY short. I wish I did more short flash. O well. I'm not even concerned with animating and it still takes me a long time to make anything.

I mean "I dropped a movie once and later used the art work in it for another movie."

O and I saw Shut it down. Did you do that for school? That's a neat little exercise. I bet you learned a lot from it.

thats a good work ethic, personally I like to come out of projects happy with them, so if I know I'm not going to be then I generally stop them.

glad you liked Shut It Down, its not for school, Im on march break and I wanted to have something small to show for it :)

I think it'd be about 5:1, i ussually start a lot of stuff at the moment i have an awesome idea for and never finish it, but when it comes to something serious i DO finish it.. xD

cool. I take collabs really seriously because nobody knows when you drop stuff you haven't told people about, but if you drop a collab you lose your rep.

its good to take serious stuff seriously!

1 out of ... 8 mayve ?

Idk why , i just lost interest , like most animators do

Oh, I've got some medicine for that. You can have some if you want :D

1: 1.

Anything that isn't a quick doodle or a silly test, or is something that I've completed over 30% of the work, I try to get done. I always make sure before starting that I won't get bored working on the project.

(Of course that's not saying much, given my crappy work, but... ;P )

Of course, if you actually INCLUDE the quick doodles and silly tests in with the work, my ratio would probably look something like 9: 1.

Just make sure you have plenty of good music to listen to while you work, and that you storyboard and outline your Flash beforehand. It makes you not lose focus and interest on your project. :)

yeah I listen to music a lot but then I start animating something BASED on music and then I have to focus on syncing it properly and stuff.

I've lost count....

haha

I lose intrest and move on to different things. When i force my self to finish im less motivated and creative. So alot of little things but the more i do ,the more the tables will turn.

for me i used to start like 5 projects and only finish maybe 2

nowadays i finish everything i start.
mainly cause i hate wasting work

thats a good way to think of it, not only do you not waste work, you use all your time.

also Im still banned from your userpage. :(

Honestly, mine would be about 30:1.
I start too many things that I don't get around to finishing.

I will factor that into my calculations! :P

I usually finish all the projects. Sometimes I have to stop because of deadlines and other work with priority. So, there are projects that don't move for months.

You should start making small things, and work your way up. If you start with something too ambitious, it will most likely not get finished.

yeah, I agree with that. Organizations in particular that try to start out as large, all encompassing brands don't usually work, where as if you start based on a single concept, and branch out once you've gotten some success, that seems to work.

i'll only finish 2 for every 3 i don't.

2/5... that's not bad. This is lazymuffin right? Hopefully the RWD hasn't become it's own person just yet :P

3:1 for me.

no way , maan you're 14 ??

Yup! It was more impressive last year; there are lots of 14 year old flash guys but the 13 year old are harder to come by.

1:3

I don't usually start things unless I intend to finish them.

llliiiike 1/6 i think. looks like im not alone!
