A QUESTION TO ALL ANIMATORS ABOUT A CERTAIN RATIO

Posted by MorrowDays Mar. 20, 2009 @ 8:34 PM EDT

I was thinking about how I'll fairly regularly start something and not finish it, and I was wondering about you guys, what do you think the ratio is between projects completed and projects not? It leads into other interesting ideas, for instance, does a better ratio generally correspond with being a better animator?

I don't know. If you guys post back with your ratio we'll all know a bit more I guess. :)

I think mine would probably be about 2 to 1 right now, two started and one finished out of three. 1/3. a third.

In terms of completion, I guess we all have different ideas about that but I'd say just go with what you feel means complete.

Also, I animated something recently. Its kind of neat I think.

mine is about 4 to 1 i guess. i start off on a random flash that seems good at the time, then lose interest.

Mar. 20, 2009 | 8:55 PM JonBro says:

Mine's probably about 4 to 1, maybe more, for the same reason as fluffkomix.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 9:36 AM MorrowDays responds:

interesting, that seems to be pretty common.

Mar. 20, 2009 | 8:56 PM Fawx says:

sometimes i do a really good drawing in the first frame of a cartoon, and then i suddenly go "wow theres no fucking way im going to be able to animate this."

Mar. 21, 2009 | 9:35 AM MorrowDays responds:

yeah, I think thats a fairly well known problem.

doesn't seem to faze newshape though, the drawings that guy animates are amazing.

Mar. 20, 2009 | 10:33 PM Dekathos says:

Umm. I hate not finishing things so I seem to always get it done even if I am unhappy with it. Especially last year. I would definitely be in the minority though.

I've written scripts for movies I never started and if I don't count those I've only ever dropped one flash I worked on. That was ages ago. Although there is one that I would like to get back to and sort of start over again. I don't think I would count that as dropped yet.

I also did a movie once where I used the art work I had for another movie instead.

Does it make you better that you get more projects done? No. You can always use from what you learned from dropped movies on newer ones.

Although I guess, if you can never finish one it's a little pointless.

Most people with a lot of flash are authors not concerned with quality and submit mostly spam. Not all of them but most. Or their movies are REALLY short. I wish I did more short flash. O well. I'm not even concerned with animating and it still takes me a long time to make anything.

Mar. 20, 2009 | 10:41 PM Dekathos says:

I mean "I dropped a movie once and later used the art work in it for another movie."

O and I saw Shut it down. Did you do that for school? That's a neat little exercise. I bet you learned a lot from it.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:32 PM MorrowDays responds:

thats a good work ethic, personally I like to come out of projects happy with them, so if I know I'm not going to be then I generally stop them.

glad you liked Shut It Down, its not for school, Im on march break and I wanted to have something small to show for it :)

Mar. 20, 2009 | 10:53 PM PinkSkull says:

I think it'd be about 5:1, i ussually start a lot of stuff at the moment i have an awesome idea for and never finish it, but when it comes to something serious i DO finish it.. xD

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:41 PM MorrowDays responds:

cool. I take collabs really seriously because nobody knows when you drop stuff you haven't told people about, but if you drop a collab you lose your rep.

its good to take serious stuff seriously!

Mar. 20, 2009 | 11:13 PM fede1920 says:

1 out of ... 8 mayve ?

Idk why , i just lost interest , like most animators do

Mar. 22, 2009 | 8:37 PM MorrowDays responds:

Oh, I've got some medicine for that. You can have some if you want :D

Mar. 20, 2009 | 11:31 PM Kart-Man says:

1: 1.

Anything that isn't a quick doodle or a silly test, or is something that I've completed over 30% of the work, I try to get done. I always make sure before starting that I won't get bored working on the project.

(Of course that's not saying much, given my crappy work, but... ;P )

Of course, if you actually INCLUDE the quick doodles and silly tests in with the work, my ratio would probably look something like 9: 1.

Just make sure you have plenty of good music to listen to while you work, and that you storyboard and outline your Flash beforehand. It makes you not lose focus and interest on your project. :)

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:43 PM MorrowDays responds:

yeah I listen to music a lot but then I start animating something BASED on music and then I have to focus on syncing it properly and stuff.

Mar. 20, 2009 | 11:41 PM JoSilver says:

I've lost count....

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:42 PM MorrowDays responds:

haha

Mar. 21, 2009 | 12:00 AM NhollowWearthO says:

I lose intrest and move on to different things. When i force my self to finish im less motivated and creative. So alot of little things but the more i do ,the more the tables will turn.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 12:16 AM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

for me i used to start like 5 projects and only finish maybe 2

nowadays i finish everything i start.
mainly cause i hate wasting work

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:48 PM MorrowDays responds:

thats a good way to think of it, not only do you not waste work, you use all your time.

also Im still banned from your userpage. :(

Mar. 21, 2009 | 12:25 AM Kweaks says:

Honestly, mine would be about 30:1.
I start too many things that I don't get around to finishing.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:48 PM MorrowDays responds:

I will factor that into my calculations! :P

Mar. 21, 2009 | 12:39 AM Fierras says:

I usually finish all the projects. Sometimes I have to stop because of deadlines and other work with priority. So, there are projects that don't move for months.

You should start making small things, and work your way up. If you start with something too ambitious, it will most likely not get finished.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:50 PM MorrowDays responds:

yeah, I agree with that. Organizations in particular that try to start out as large, all encompassing brands don't usually work, where as if you start based on a single concept, and branch out once you've gotten some success, that seems to work.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 12:42 AM RadicalWrongDoers says:

i'll only finish 2 for every 3 i don't.

Mar. 22, 2009 | 8:40 PM MorrowDays responds:

2/5... that's not bad. This is lazymuffin right? Hopefully the RWD hasn't become it's own person just yet :P

Mar. 21, 2009 | 12:44 AM PBass says:

3:1 for me.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 1:34 AM fede1920 says:

no way , maan you're 14 ??

Mar. 22, 2009 | 8:42 PM MorrowDays responds:

Yup! It was more impressive last year; there are lots of 14 year old flash guys but the 13 year old are harder to come by.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 1:40 AM Jimtopia says:

1:3

I don't usually start things unless I intend to finish them.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 2:03 AM farfenwaffle says:

llliiiike 1/6 i think. looks like im not alone!

Mar. 21, 2009 | 5:13 AM MarcyVF says:

Before, it was like 1 to 10 or 20. That's when I was sorta 8-9 years old lol. But now that I see what people like and stuff, and also when I have a coupple of series going, I'd guess my ratio is like 1 to 3 or 1 to 2. I can't shut down an episode of skv2 for example. But still, when I think of it there's a lot of games and stuff that I never finish even though I post it here on NG and all that. That's sad. My ratio varies from 1-to-6, to 1-to-2

lolll.

Mar. 22, 2009 | 8:43 PM MorrowDays responds:

That makes sense, a fanbase is definitely a good motivator :D

Mar. 21, 2009 | 6:18 AM TheBoogley says:

I don't know what my ratio is, because a lot of what I do is just experiments which I don't plan on making into a finished animation... For animations where I've set out to make something with an idea or storyboard I always finish them... except one time, but I don't want to talk about that. As for ideas, I've got a million of them and only make a couple, which I'm sure most of you guys can relate to.

Mar. 22, 2009 | 8:45 PM MorrowDays responds:

Haha... I think you're the cleanest so far.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 8:37 AM MindChamber says:

1 out of 5 sadly. Its tough to stay concetrated especially if a new idea comes out while working on an older one. Making what you are working on , not so great in your eyes.I try to keep all my ideas in check by quickly writing them down and pushing them away.

Mar. 22, 2009 | 8:46 PM MorrowDays responds:

Good tip, I'll try that.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 1:01 PM ixintro says:

I used to NEVER complete any of my projects, but now the ratio is 5:1 (5 Complete, 1 unfinished) and usually the one I don't finish is due to time constraints or deciding to finish other projects I'm currently working on. I'm working on 3 different movies at the same time right now! :D

Mar. 21, 2009 | 3:35 PM OzMafioso says:

Maybe I'm crazy, but anything I start, I literally make myself finish, regardless of losing interest. For some, that would turn animation/games into shit because the lack of motivation, therefore they just let it go, but I basically just put myself back into the mode and get back into the project with force, lol.

I guess my way of not becoming burnt out, is by working on multiple projects at once. But some advice would be to never delete projects that you "think" you are done with, because you never know when you may get a spark of inspiration to bring that project back to life.

Mar. 21, 2009 | 3:43 PM OzMafioso says:

Another thing I'd like to add, many people start to wonder to themselves if the project is even any good, that's because they've messed with it so long that it becomes hard to tell.

But keep this in mind: The project is only becoming old to YOU, nobody else has seen it yet, so it may be something fresh and new that is being hidden from the world's eyes.

Mar. 28, 2009 | 7:50 PM MorrowDays responds:

yeah these are good points. :)

Mar. 21, 2009 | 4:55 PM Archon68 says:

I have about 20 unfinished projects in my "Ben's Flash Movies" folder.

Mar. 28, 2009 | 7:50 PM MorrowDays responds:

lol I have like >300

Apr. 3, 2009 | 6:17 PM Rutger says:

Ehhh I used to complete nothing, but I stopped with that.

I think I now finish 3 out of 4 projects

Apr. 20, 2009 | 6:04 PM MorrowDays responds:

Apr. 16, 2009 | 7:51 PM ChillyCheese says:

1:20

I have tried to complete many flashes, but just end up getting bored with them. My only completed solo flash is the last flash I submitted.

I mostly just do short tests and practices though.

Apr. 20, 2009 | 6:04 PM MorrowDays responds:

yeah I loved that interactive thread you set up on UPWN. great stuff.

Jun. 26, 2009 | 1:43 AM Senilek says:

sorry im late, but this was a good question, and it always come to my mind as well.

i cant pinpoint a ratio cuz ive found that im always getting swarme with new ideas as i watch movies, tv, read and draw, so its very hard for me to stay committed to one project at a time. and projects get started on, and then scrapped quite alot actually, mostly because i think its a great idea first, get a few scenes done and see that I cant make it how i wanted to originally.
the three cartoons i have up were made because I told myself to do them, intentionally reducing the quality or how little time i took to make them. I just wanted to see my ideas get made, and completed.
so im always working on something, whether just tests or actual projects im trying to get done.
yea

Happy Birthday to us.

Aug. 9, 2009 | 6:52 AM TheBoogley says:

enough about the ratio, tell me something new! :O

Aug. 9, 2009 | 8:12 PM NewShape says:

Animation is generally self flagellation. You have to have determination to duke it out no matter how bad it might be which is what separates animation from those godawful sprite movies.

Aug. 20, 2009 | 12:43 PM MorrowDays responds:

I like that.
